CHILI RECIPE (Pilipili ya kukaanga)

A simple recipe from me to you.
Prep Time 5 mins
Cook Time 10 mins
Total Time 15 mins
Servings 1 bowl


  • 2 large tomatoes (grated)
  • 1 large onion (grated)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • salt (to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons chilli powder (heaped)
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large lemon


  • Add the tomatoes and onions into a pot
  • Let it simmer for 2-4 minutes
  • Add the turmeric and chilli powder and salt
  • Cook it for 2 minutes then add the vegetable oil into the chilli.
  • Let that simmer on low heat for 4 more minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and let it cool.
  • Squeeze in some lemon juice,stir and serve with the meal of your choice.


You can moderate the chili to your liking.
You can use whichever oil you’d like.
The purpose of the oil is to prevent it from going bad.

Marina’s escapade Famous Chili recipe

Marina’s favorite chili recipe. That statement is not a lie. I have the best chili recipe in the entire world. Pilipili ya kukaanga is the Swahili name of this chili recipe. Kaanga means cook and pilipili means chili. So if you translate it directly, its “cooked chili”. My parents love this recipe. Every time I make it they always have to remind me to make it in large portions so they can store some in the freezer for later. It’s just right!

Having grown up in coast part of my childhood, i got to learn how to cook various Swahili dishes very well and i perfect on all of them day by day. As well as learning new recipes as well. So this chili is In fact a Swahili dish.

This Recipe is sour at the same time almost sweet. This particular taste comes mostly from the onions. I usually have two ways to make this recipe. The first methods is by using onions while the second one , i also like to use raw mangoes, reason being they also give us a sweet and sour taste.

You could always increase the portions of chili your making and just put them in containers and into the freezer, they go. This chili can stay in the freezer for up to a month and more without going bad.

  • Put in the turmeric. salt and chili powder and stir that up well.
  • Let that cook for 2 minutes then add the oil into the chili.
  • Stir that up, cover it and let it cook under low heat for minutes
  • Turn off the heat and let to cool.
  • Once cooled, squeeze in some lemon juice and serve with the meal of your choice.

I especially love this chili when im having it with seasoned fries(click here to check for the recipe) or sausage. The purpose of the oil is to prevent it from going bad and you can always adjust the amount of chili powder to your liking.
